Volunteer Opportunities

Join us for camp July 13-17, 2020

Thank you for your interest in Girls Rock Dallas. We love our volunteers! We are 100% volunteer run, and volunteers help fulfill our mission by giving their hearts and time to make each moment special for future rock stars.

There are a lot of reasons to volunteer your time to Girls Rock Dallas. One of those reasons is the good feeling you get when you make a difference in a young person’s life. Another reason is that Girls Rock Dallas is a great organization dedicated to empowering campers through music education and cultivating higher self-esteem and confidence.

And last, but not least, you get to meet a lot of cool people! The week-long camp truly is a fun experience. The rewards alone of seeing the campers evolve during the week display the impact Girls Rock Dallas has.

Application Process

Girls Rock Dallas is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering girls, women, trans and gender-expansive individuals through music education. Because our work involves minors, as part of the application process we must conduct an interview for new volunteers and a criminal background check on all volunteers. Volunteers must complete and sign a background check form that will be provided at a later date. A training session is required for camp counselors, band coaches and instrument instructors. All volunteers will attend the mandatory orientation the Sunday prior to camp.

Volunteer Opportunities

Camp Counselor
No music experience necessary, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (10 spots available)

You will serve as a mentor to your assigned band, make sure the campers are where they need to be at all times and attend the debrief meeting each day. Camp Counselors with musical experience may also coach campers on their instruments throughout the day and during the band practice. Female, trans and gender expansive welcome.

Instrument Instructor
Music experience required, Monday to Thursday mornings (1-2 spots for each instrument: vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums)

Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level. Some have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it is time to teach them what you know. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group sessions (generally 3-5 students per teacher). You can also meet or email with your fellow instrument instructors at least once before orientation to decide on a curriculum and what style and level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. This position combines well with band coach or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering. We are looking for guitar, bass, vocal, keyboards and drums. Instrument instructors, although part-time, must be available each day. Female, trans and gender expansive welcome.

Band Coach
Songwriting/instrument knowledge needed, Monday through Friday afternoons (10 spots available)

Band coaches are assigned one band to help prepare a song for the Showcase. You will help the campers during band selection on the first day and assist them each camp day in learning how to play as a group, both musically and interpersonally. Female, trans and gender expansive welcome.

Workshop Presenter
No musical experience necessary.

Each of our workshops values developing life skills and self-esteem, as well as encouraging creativity, self-expression and awareness. Examples of workshops that have been taught at other rock camps: History of Women in Rock, Self-Defense, Image & Identity, Songwriting, Teen Issues, Recording your Band, Engineering & Lighting and Band T-Shirt Screen Printing. Must be available to teach 1 or 2 one-hour sessions on the day of your scheduled workshop. Female, trans and gender expansive welcome.

Kitchen Crew
No musical experience necessary, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Multiple spots and shifts)

Our awesome campers and volunteers rely on food energy (and coffee) to rock the day away. As part of the kitchen crew, some of your responsibilities will include picking up breakfast and lunch for the volunteers, running to the store for any snack needs and making camper lunches and snacks. Keeping the kitchen area clean and stocked is important, too. These responsibilities will usually begin before camp starts each morning and wrap up after lunch time, so this position is perfect for someone who can spare a few hours in the morning. This volunteer position is open to anyone who is interested in giving their time!

Band and Workshop Liaison

We also have community workshop presenters that provide valuable information, tools and skills to our campers. We want these camp VIPs to be greeted, assisted with setting up and supported during their time with us.
