Erica was our drum instructor at last year’s camp! She currently plays with Virgin Gun Club in Dallas, Texas. She has been playing drums for over 6 years and was influenced by Go-Go’s drummer, Gina Schock. At 8 years old, Erica saw the video “We Got the Beat” and was immediately captivated by her percussion skills. She is also influenced by Janet Weiss (drummer from Sleater-Kinney and currently a member of Quasi and Wild Flag). Erica states, “I hope to mimic her drum handling one day because she’s a beast on the drums.”
Erica uses Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Evans heads for her toms/kick drum, and a Remo head for her snare.
Some of her favorite bands stem from the 80s, such as New Order, The Smiths, Duran Duran, The Pretenders, The Cure, Joy Division. Erica also admires Stevie Nicks for her songwriting and singing skills. “I adore her music as a solo artist and when she was with Fleetwood Mac.” Erica also enjoys listening to indie rock!
Her favorite part of camp last year was drum instruction. She stated, “It was cool hearing the girls play on the first day and then by the fourth day, it was a huge difference. It made me feel good because I could tell I made a difference by working with them and providing tips and suggestions. Working with kids is fun.”
When Erica is not laying it down on the drums, she enjoys listening to music, making playlists and watching Doctor Who. She streams a lot of TV shows online and tends to watch them twice. “When I’m not engaged in my TV shows, you can usually find me at the movie theater partaking in double features, at Half Price Books, or venturing to local venues to watch live bands.”
When asked what advice you would give future musicians that want to play, Erica said, “I would tell him/her to not give up, even though he/she may get frustrated at first. Like anything, playing an instrument takes precision and practice. As I would tell my campers, “perfect practice makes perfect.” This is something my Drill Instructor from the Marine Corps Recruit Training would tell all of us and it stuck with me ever since.”
